The Fit Fem News: How to Train For A Marathon

The Fit Fem hit the streets to start up a series called The Fit Fem News! The goal was to interview as many women as I could to learn and understand their motivation in working out.

This week, I met these two amazing ladies who are preparing for a marathon in Philadelphia this year! They work out six to seven days a week, mixing up their workouts. The friends of more than 20 years said that one of the things that motivates them to participate in marathons is one another (in unison: awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!).

So to all my Fit Fem'rs, who are pounding the pavement in full or half marathons this year, this one's for you!

How To Prepare For a Marathon

Consult your doctor: This is extremely IMPORTANT! Training for a marathon is very hard and exhausting so make sure you get your doctor's OK before you start running.

Find the right marathon for you: Can you run 5 miles or maybe 20 miles? Find a marathon that is perfect for you and your capabilities. If 26.4 miles is too much for you, choose a race instead like a 5 or 10K. Be realistic!

Get a good pair of running shoes: They may be expensive, but they are a good investment. Buying running shoes that are suitable for your running style, foot type, and level of fitness will help you to run comfortably and injury-free. Oh, and a good sports bra will come in handy too.

Join a running group: Find a group online or simply ask around. The people in the group will give you the motivation to continue training, you can share ideas and you can make friends!

Change your eating patterns: It will be hard, but you have to eat clean! You need to consume nutritious proteins and carbohydrates to give you energy and to repair your muscles.

Stay focused: It is very easy to get sidetracked or discouraged when we try to do something positive, but don't stop! Visualize yourself running and reaching that finish line. Always remember the reason you decided to complete a marathon in the first place.

So get the training girls! Whoop Whoop!
