This Woman Wants to Change How All of Us See Our Bodies
My heroine – Taryn Brumfitt! Have you heard of her? Well, if this name is new to you, let me explain why it is a name that will change the way you view yourself. Brumfitt is a woman who refuses to accept the negative responses women say about their bodies. She is on a mission to change how the world sees women, and her main focus is to “convince every woman to love her body as it is, to stop buying into corporate messages about beauty, and to change the vocabulary” when it comes to describing themselves.
Brumfitt has a website called BodyImageMovement.com and is currently working on a documentary called “Embrace”. Both projects will explore the dilemma of body loathing and provide insights on how we, as a society, can change this reality for women. (A dilemma I’ve personally experienced and am adamant about sharing to prevent others from suffering.) Brumfitt once hated her own body image; she even went so far as to consider having plastic surgery (boob job) and a tummy tuck. – Funny, so have I!!! I’ve gone on consultations to get a few nipped and tucked myself... until I walked out of there feeling objectified by the cosmetic doctor. She gave me a laundry list of things I could “improve” on my body – body parts that I never thought were an issue but all of a sudden became one. Taryn’s moment of truth took place when she considered her daughter and the impact her decisions would have on her daughter’s own self-image. My moment of truth was I was diagnosed with Lupus.
I have been in her place. The constant hating of yourself, the urge to change what you see in the mirror, the daily fight in making yourself believe you are beauty. It is not an easy thing to overcome and Brumfitt is a true inspiration. She sees the issues faced by women and wants to create change. (My deepest desire in my core-being as well). This is a movement that NEEDS, NEEDS, NEEDS to succeed. We need to embrace our bodies. We need to leave behind the body hating and love ourselves for who we are and what we represent. The commercials, the advertisements and the product placements are just adding to the image issues we have in society today.
Here are the questions Brumfitt puts out into society:
“Women are always being told to change or be different -- lose weight, fight aging, smooth your skin, get rid of cellulite, I mean really, women are such amazing and dynamic creatures can we please change the conversation from this bullsh*t to something with a little more substance?”
Yes!!!!!!! This is why I’m deeply passionate about the ways women view exercise. How can we move away from “I hate my body, let me exercise so I can lose weight?” to “ I LOVE my body, I exercise because it makes me feel AMAZING!” Can we please change this conversation? Who is with us???
